Llun clawr The Heyday in the Blood gan Geraint Goodwin

“It has filled me with a sense of seeing great talent trying its first flight, which I have not experienced since reading D.H Lawrence’s The White Peacock”
Howard Spring

“It is a mystery why a masterpiece like The Heyday in the Blood has been overlooked. Alternately comic and touching... a poignant romance."
Paul Duerdan

"[The Heyday in the Blood] explores issues of nationality, language and class with a humorous yet tragic story attached... The in-depth descriptions of places and situations create a vivid image for the reader, providing an interesting if challenging read."
Buzz Magazine

Crynodeb:
Pentref Tanygraig ar y ffin rhwng Cymru a Lloegr yw lle gosodir y nofel angerddol hon am gariad a’i ganlyniadau. Mae dau ddyn ar ôl Beti, merch brydferth a phenstiff landlord y dafarn: Llew, ei chefnder pengoch ymosodol, ac Evan, y melinydd a’r cyw bardd breuddwydiol. Rhaid iddi benderfynu ond nid ei dyfodol hi yn unig sy’n dibynnu ar ei phenderfyniad. Y mae hithau a Thanygraig yn sefyll yn simsan ar ffiniau dosbarth, cenedl, iaith ac amseroedd sy’n newid. Yn y nofel hirbarhaus hon gan Geraint Goodwin, a gyhoeddwyd gyntaf ym 1936, cysylltir Cymru â thraddodiad a sefydlogrwydd, mae Lloegr gyfystyr â moderniaeth a symud. Mae Beti’n ymwybodol o fyw ar ffin fydol: ‘The old way of things was ending; she had come at the end of one age and the beginning of another. Wales would be the last to go – but it was going…’

Nodiadau bywgraffyddol:
Ganed Geraint Goodwin yng Nghymru ym 1903. Dechreuodd ysgrifennu ar oedran cynnar, cafodd ei lwyddiant cyntaf mewn Eisteddfod. Fel dyn ifanc gwnaeth ei fywoliaeth fel newyddiadurwr yn Llundain, lle’r ysgrifennodd ei lyfr cyntaf Conversations with George Moore, ac fe’i dilynwyd gan Call Back Yesterday. Ond ni chyhoeddodd ei waith ffuglen cyntaf hyd nes ei fod yn ddeg ar hugain a dwy mlwydd oed. Gwnaeth The Heyday in the Blood gryn argraff ar y beirniaid ac fe’i cydnabuwyd fel ail Thomas Hardy. Daeth ei farwolaeth annhymig ym 1941 â diwedd i yrfa lenyddol wych nad oedd ond prin wedi cael cyfle i gychwyn. Roedd yn briod ac roedd ganddo ddau o blant, merch a bachgen.

Rhagflas byr

Beti had gone out to see the kingfisher. She went tripping out over the old lawn, her feet sinking into it and with each step there came that strange resilience from the earth; it felt as though she were going to take flight.
