Llun clawr Jampot Smith gan Jeremy Brooks

"His fiction aspired to, and often achieved, a Chekhovian mixture of comic concision and pathos. Jampot Smith is a small classic about the delight and pain of sexual awakening; it will outlast its period and provincial setting."
Michael Kustow

“Brooks explores ephemeral relationships with delicacy and charm.”
The New York Times

“A novel to be savoured…it is hard to suggest the originality, the illumination of this novel about adolescent emotions in years of World War II in simmering Llandudno."
The Times

"“Jeremy Brooks has come to considerable stature in Jampot Smith.”
Anthony Burgess

Nodiadau bywgraffyddol:
Ganed Jeremy Brooks yn Southampton ym 1926. Fe’i addysgwyd yn Ysgol John Bright yn Llandudno, wedi dod yn ifaciwî i ogledd Cymru ym 1940. Ymrestrodd yn y Llynges a threuliodd amser yng Ngholeg y Fadlen, Rhydychen cyn gwasanaethu ym Môr y Canoldir. Wedi’r rhyfel astudiodd Gynllunio Llwyfan yn Ysgol Gelf Camberwell. Symudodd yn ôl i ogledd Cymru ym 1953 gyda’i wraig, yr arlunydd Eleanor Brooks, a llogi bwthyn ar ystâd Clough Williams Ellis yn Llanfrothen. Cawsant bedwar o blant. Er mwyn cynnal ei hun tra’i fod yn ysgrifennu ffuglen gweithiodd yn achlysurol fel gweinydd gwin yn y bwyty yng Ngwesty Portmeirion ac aeth ymlaen wedi hynny i ysgrifennu nofel, The Water Carnival (1957), sy'n dychanu'r pentref Eidalaidd. Cyhoeddwyd Jampot Smith ym 1960, Henry’s War ym 1962 a Smith as Hero ym 1964.
Yn ddiweddarach cychwynnodd ar yrfa theatrig, oedd yn cynnwys cyfnod fel rheolwr llenyddol y Royal Shakespeare Company gyda Peter Hall o 1962 i 1969. Bu’n gyfrifol, ynghyd â Kitty Hunter-Blair, am nifer o addasiadau blaengar o ddramâu gan ddramodwyr o Rwsia gan gynnwys Maxim Gorky a Nikolai Gogol. Cafwyd derbyniad brwd iawn i addasiad o The Government Inspector, gyda Paul Scofield. Gweithiodd yn helaeth ar gyfer theatr, teledu a radio gan gynhyrchu sawl gwaith gwreiddiol ac addasiadau gan gynnwys (gydag Adrian Mitchell), fersiwn o A Child’s Christmas in Wales gan Dylan Thomas. Ysgrifennodd farddoniaeth, llyfrau plant a gweithiodd yn helaeth gyda Theatr Clwyd yn Yr Wyddgrug hefyd, gan gynhyrchu addasiad nodedig o Medea. Roedd yn enwog am helpu gyrfaoedd a datblygiad awduron ifanc ac roedd yn aelod sylfaen o Undeb Awduron Cymru.
Ei waith diwethaf i gael ei gyhoeddi oedd casgliad o straeon byrion, o’r enw Doing the Voices (1986). Bu farw ym 1994.

Rhagflas byr

Throughout our youth in Llandudno, Gregory was ever the nasty prophet of our loves. Like a woman, he seemed to know in advance what shifts might be expected in the changing pattern of our relationships and never failed to heighten the embarrassment of any dying affair by recalling to all parties the accuracy of his earlier predictions. Yet he was himself so socially inept, so clumsy, gauche, obvious, that we regarded him as a sort of clown, placed among us as a warning of what might happen if we, too, took ourselves a little too seriously.
