Llun clawr The Alone to the Alone gan Gwyn Thomas

"Once you have heard the lark, known the swish of feet through hill-top grass and smelt the earth made ready for the seed, you are never again going to be fully happy about the cities and towns that man carries like a crippling weight upon his back."

Crynodeb:
Cyhoeddwyd The Alone to the Alone gyntaf ym 1947. Daeth, mae Gwyn Thomas yn cofio “ochenaid olaf tymer treisgar” y creu, a’r creu hwnnw arweiniodd ato’n ysgrifennu ei gampweithiau cynnar, Oscar a The Dark Philosophers. Mae The Alone to the Alone yn uno darnau naratif telynegol ac athronyddol Gwyn Thomas mewn dychan sydd â’r unig ryddhad yn erbyn ei greulondeb yn ei chwerthin diatal. Dyma waith mwyaf ffurfiedig Gwyn Thomas: gydag ystyr waelodol hanes de Cymru, nid yn gymaint yn cael ei dogfennu ond yn hytrach ei dinoethi ar gyfer dadansoddi a lledaenu byd eang. Mae’r nofel, gyda’i hadrodd lluosog nodedig, yn sylwebaeth gorawl ar y rhith dynol a gwybodaeth, ar bŵer a’i amddifadedd cysylltiol, ar freuddwydion a’u dinistr. Mae The Alone to the Alone yn Hanes fel Carnifal, ac yn llais arbennig Gwyn Thomas, mae’n weledigaeth gomig o ddynoliaeth nad yw’n adnabod unrhyw ffiniau daearyddol.

Nodiadau bywgraffyddol:
Ganed Gwyn Thomas i deulu mawr swnllyd yn y Porth, Cwm Rhondda, ym 1913. Wedi ysgoloriaeth i Ysgol Sirol y Porth aeth i St Edmund Hall, Rhydychen, lle bu’n astudio Sbaeneg. Dyfnhaodd diweithdra mawr a thlodi eang yn ne Cymru ei radicaliaeth. Wedi gweithio dros Sefydliad Addysgol y Gweithwyr daeth yn athro, yn gyntaf yn Aberteifi ac o 1942 yn Y Barri. Ym 1962 gadawodd ddysgu a chanolbwyntio ar ysgrifennu a darlledu. Mae ei nifer o weithiau ffuglen yn cynnwys The Dark Philosophers (1946); The Alone to the Alone (1947); All Things Betray Thee (1949); The World Cannot Hear You (1951) a Now Lead Us Home (1952). Ysgrifennodd sawl casgliad o straeon byrion hefyd, chwe drama lwyfan a’r hunangofiant A Few Selected Exits (1968). Bu farw ym 1981.

Rhagflas byr

In the Terraces, we never opposed love. The way we viewed this question was that love must be pretty deeply rooted to have gone on for so long. One would have to be very deep to tinker with so deep a root, deeper than we were. Also, love passes on the time. That is a prime feature in any place where there is a scarcity of work for the local men and women to do, a state which prevailed on a high plane indeed during the dark years now being spoken of. Also, love, properly used, keeps people warm.
